Madden 09 at IGN
So, IGN also has released the first division full of ratings. That division happens to be the home of the World Champion New York Giants, the NFC East. Here's what's newsworthy:
Cowboys:
Tony Romo, QB - 94
Complete with virtual Jessica Simpson! Sorry, I just had to.
Marion Barber III, RB - 93
Barber is a beast and finally gets a little bit of respect in '09. EA got this one right.
Felix Jones, RB - 80
Sounds about right. Only a 79 in catch?
Zach Thomas, ILB - 94
They do this every year. If a player has ever made a pro bowl, they NEVER lower his rating. Zach isn't this good anymore.
Mike Jenkins, CB - 82
Good to see they just don't rate them on where they were taken in the draft.
Roy Williams, S - 88
He's still overrated. He should be a 0 in coverage.
New York Giants:
Eli Manning, QB - 93
Oh, is this going to make people mad......I can see Jason committing Suicide as we speak.
Jeremy Shockey, TE - 94
The first time he hasn't been a 98 since his rookie year.
David Diehl, LT - 93
Respect.
Justin Tuck, DE - 94
He's rated the same as Strahan. I dare anyone to take a seven step drop against me when I'm the Giants.
Kenny Phillips, S - 80
A little underrated. That will change by mid-season.

And I Suddenly Want to Light Myself on Fire...
-IGN.com is reporting that an SEC filing has revealed the fact that Guitar Hero: Metallica is coming down the pipe.
A long time ago, when Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was first announced, I aired all my grievances against this business plan. When GH4 came to light, I hoped that Activision had seen the error of their ways and decided to make Aerosmith their only band specific game.
I should have known, when there's money to be made...
-In other Video game news, Ninja Gaiden 2 comes out tomorrow. Now, this game is not for any of the following: Children, people with weak stomachs, or the easily frustrated. If there are two words to describe the NG series, they are bloody and diffucult. That being said, as a Devil May Cry fan, I love a good challenge and am not afraid of blood.
Look for a full review sometime in the next couple weeks.

It's About That Time Again...
Another Year, Another Madden Countdown. This one is brought to you by IGN.com, Which is the best video game site on the web. Seriously.

There's a nice long preview up on their site that details some of the nuances of the new game, and it all sounds cool. However, it was the second to last paragraph that pumped me up.
"There are team specific playbooks that have been designed for every squad in the league for both offense and defense. There's also a new stat simulation system that will hopefully ensure the validity of statistics for those fantasy junkies who just want to assemble squads and sim their way through a season. We're hoping that means no more multi-2,000-yard rushers. "
Ahh, Attention to Detail.
Madden 09 will be released on August 9th. As usual, Stay tuned to The 3SS for the best INDEPENDENT and UNBIASED Madden release coverage on the web.

How About That?
So, It appears that Brett Favre is going to grace the cover of Madden NFL 09. The only thing I could say is:
Wow, That was so obvious that I didn't even think of it.
I mean, we all know that John Madden loves him some Brett Favre, and with everyone's favorite cheese head retiring, what better time to put him on the cover? It's not like the Madden Curse is going to hurt his golf game.
Hey, It's better than Jared Zabransky on the cover of NCAA 08.
Speaking of NCAA, The '09 Edition will be covered by soon-to-be Baltimore Raven Matt Ryan on the PS3, and Darren McFadden on the Xbox 360. Now, this kind of annoys me. Does EA think that I'm going to buy a different version of the game depending on who is on the cover?

Backbreaker's Awesomeness...
Backbreaker is a video game that will likely never see the light of day, but may be saving football video games as we know it.
Sounds Weird? It is.
The game is based on the same physics engine that is being used to create action games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Star Wars: Force Unleashed. What does that mean? It means that every single tackle will be unique, taking angles, force and logical path to the ball carrier into consideration, unlike Madden where every tackle is a pre-canned animation, no matter how good it looks.
The sad truth is that Madden will probably buy this technology before the game ever comes out, or at the very least shortly after it does, but at least if they implement into Madden, it will be something new.

Interesting Marketing...
EA Sports will include NFL Head Coach '09 as a pack-in with Madden '09's 20th anniversary edition. The whole shebang will cost about 80 bucks.
Now, I think this is a good idea, because Jason and I knew that HC would not sell after Madden already came out. We also thought that ideally, HC would come out in February, and give people the ability to re-sign, sign, and draft alongside the actual events that happened.
However, how many people are going to spring for HC? Madden is more than enough for most, so I wonder.
Oh Yeah, Here's an actual Head Coach Hands-on preview from our friends at Gamespot.
Now, I think this is a good idea, because Jason and I knew that HC would not sell after Madden already came out. We also thought that ideally, HC would come out in February, and give people the ability to re-sign, sign, and draft alongside the actual events that happened.

How to Fix Madden Vol. 1: What Ain't Broken...
Bad English Aside, Here are all the things that work about this year's game:
1) Gameplay: Once a patch lowered the number of turnovers a little bit, it became a very fun game to play. There is no real negative thing I could think of off the top of my head to say "well, that needs to be fixed." For once, they got something right.
2) In-Season Drills in Franchise Mode: I'm not saying that every drill is perfect, because it certainly is not. However, I love the idea of being able to improve players throughout the season manually. I love the idea that how much leeway you get in the mini-games is based upon the potential of the player. I think that it's a great idea, exceuted pretty well. The only problem is that it becomes a huge part of development, and if you choose not to do it, you end up at a huge disadvantage.
3) Frequent Roster Updates: Every week during the playoffs. Kudos, EA. Well Done.
4) Fun Online Multiplayer: Ask Brandon about the time I came back on him with Jamie (Ingle) Martin at the Helm. Ask Glenn about my Blitz package that he can't beat. It's so fun to play online.
While that's a good chunk of the game that's right, It also leaves a lot of stuff that is not at all. The hope is to get to it all over the next five months, leading to National Madden Day.

- A new year of How to Fix Madden! I've played more Madden this year than any in the past 4-6 years, so I have a lot to say.
- Analysis of the upcoming Baseball season, and the inevitable Yankee Dominance that follows.
- Much like Jason did toward the beginning of this endeavor, I want to start doing Lists. Top 10's and the such.
