The 3rd String Safety: Kenny Phillips

1. Kenny Phillips, S, Miami - This is the guy that the Giants wanted all along. That's good, because I think all the fans wanted him to. For those of you who aren't familiar with Phillips, Take Gibril Wilson; his nose for the ball, his reckless abandon, his lack of fear of anyone, and now give him better physical skills. Boom, that's Kenny Phillips. K-Phil is also much better in coverage than Gibril ever was. I'll never hate on Wilson and all he brought to the team, but I'm a lot less sad that he left now than I was Friday.

2. Terrell Thomas, CB, USC - Thomas is an interesting case that proves something about the Giants war room that a lot of people already know: Jerry Reese is all about Size and Speed. Thomas is big at 6'0, 202, and has the strength to jam any receiver at the line. He is instinctive when the ball is in the air. Why was he taken in the 2nd round then? Well, there are two reasons: First, he lacks proper technique right now. He's not that smooth and doesn't always pop his hips open well. The other, more important concern is that he has a history of injuries that is troubling. He's dislocated both shoulders trying to tackle runners in 2003, and 2007 and tore ligaments in his knee in 2005

Pick Grade: B-

3. Mario Manningham, WR, Michigan - This is another Size/Speed guy. However, there is one confusing thing about this. When you watch film of Manningham, you notice two things. The first, negative thing is that you don't see a whole lot of separation from college corners. That's troubling because separation is a good way to tell if a receiver is going to be successful in the NFL. If you can't get open against college corners, how can you get open against Champ Bailey and Dre Bly? You can't.

However, There is something else you notice. He has a Plaxico Burress-like ability to go up and get the ball at the height of it's flight and pull it away from defenders. However, is that enough to be an NFL receiver?

I don't know.

4. Bryan Kehl, OLB, BYU - Kehl has a lot of upside. He's a much better athlete than he is a linebacker, but accepts coaching well, and I'm willing to bet that the team thinks that it can turn him into a starting caliber linebacker. He'll immediately make an impact on special teams and will work of playing lower and hitting the hole on running plays all summer. I like this pick.

Pick Grade - B+

5. Jonathan Goff, ILB, Vanderbilt - He'll move to the outside in the NFL. I'm a little annoyed here, because I really like Wes Woodyard out of Kentucky (famous for Mike Singletary referring to him as "Hey, Kentucky!" all week during Senior Bowl practice.) but seeing as he is small, I doubted Reese would like him as I did. I don't see Goff being anything more than a special teamer.

6. Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky - I've been talking up Woodson for a long time now based on this theory: He was uber-successful in college with HORRIBLE mechanics. What happens if he ever gets them right? He'd be a monster. That being said, Andre will most likely never play a snap for the Giants, but hey Matt Schaub brought in a second round pick...and in the sixth round, why the hell not?

6b. Robert Henderson, Southern Mississippi - VERY raw pass rusher. Then, again so was Osi...

Overall Grade: B+

Good Value in the first two rounds, lots of Size-Speed gambles on day two. It's the same formula as last year, and that worked out ok.
