2a. (34) Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan St. - I've enver been wild about Thomas because of his lack of production in college. He's a one-year wonder. However, at this point he is such a value that it's ahrd not to take him. To get the draft's (maybe) best receiver at pick number 34 is Larceny.
Pick Grade: A
2b. (48) Fred Davis, TE, USC - Here's the pass catching tight end that you need in the West Coast offense that Jim Zorn will be implementing in Washington. Davis has soft hands and is athletic, but is a glorified wide receiver. Don't ever expect him to block. Solid Pick.
Pick Grade: B
2c. (51) Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma - And the West Coast Offense is complete. Kelly is a boom or bust pick because of all the negative hype around his name over the alst few months. He hasn't done a single thing right since the season ended and now he's got a chance to make it all better by being the big receiver that the Redskins need. If I had to guess, I would say that Santana Moss might not be around in DC much longer.
Pick Grade: B+
3. (96) Chad Rhinehart, G, Nothern Iowa - That Northern Iowa line must have been sick with two draftees. Rhinehart needs alot of work on technique but has the two things that you need in a guard, size and an attitude. Should be a starter soon.
Pick Grade: B
4. (124) Justin Tryon, CB, Arizona St. - Has decent size, but is not a solid tackler and can be shielded from the ball by bigger receivers. Maybe will be a nickel corner, not more.
Pick Grade: C+
6a. (168) Durant Brooks, P, Georgia Tech - It's a punter. You take the best one available.
Pick Grade: C
6b. (180)Kareem Moore, S, Nicholls State - Another small school guy in the late rounds. Moore doesn't do anything particularly well, but will provide depth and presence on special teams.
Pick Grade: C
6c. (186) Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii: I've gushed enough about how much I like Colt, so I won't bore you anymore. However, just remember this. This staff didn't draft Jason Campbell, and Colt is a better fit for the West Coast offense.
Pick Grade: A-
7a.(242) Rob Jackson, DE, Kansas State - The typical smallish, rush end project that ever takes in the late rounds.
Pick Grade: C
7b. (249) Christopher Horton, S, UCLA -Hard nosed, up-in-the-box safety. Figures to start on special teams and then, who knows. Big liability in coverage.
Pick Grade: B-
Overall Draft Grade: B+
This is no longer Joe Gibbs' team. Jim Zorn put the stamp of approval on it quickly with the new receivers, and tight end and doesn't figure to let go anytime soon. One of the better drafts that anyone has ever had without a first rounder.

I like Jim Zorn a whole lot more now.
Look the Redskins could have traded away their whole draft, like they always do.
I have said many a time the Redskins needed a fundamental shift in the way they put together a football team. Yes, they were a playoff team...however they were an over matched playoff team. They needed to restock their roster with young talent, not only to win now and in the future but to regain a hold of a salary cap situation that had gotten out of control.

Is a deep draft that addresses many different positions. They completed the switch to a West Coast Offense by round 3. And they even got a QB to groom (Brennan) in a system that plays to his strengths.
While many of their picks are boom bust they had so many selections that the odds are int he favour.
The Redskins had one of the best drafts this year, and it's sounds good to say that again because....
I hate the Giants.

It's Sam Baker. A solid Pass protector, not a first round value though. It's a questionable pick. Mel's Grade of C- is about right.

Draft Rumor Mill: 04/23
- The Cardinals have confirmed that they have denied several offers for Anquan Boldin. Among those involved are the Eagles and the Redskins. The Eagles have way more firepower, as they are looking to trade away Lito Shepard, which would fill a huge hole for the Cards. However, Arizona is claiming that there is nothing that would make them trade Boldin Away.
- The Saints have been looking to move up in the draft for awhile now. They appear to be targeting LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, which would mean that they need to strike a deal with the Rams, because the Falcons will select Dorsey at 3. Don't look for this deal to happen, and look for New Orleans to stay put at 10.
- The Final terms of the Jared Allen trade is in. It took a first and two thirds. The Chiefs knew what they were doing apparently. They now have six picks in the top 100, and this could be the draft that makes or breaks the Herm Edwards era at Arrowhead.
- It wouldn't be a rumor mill without a Jeremy Shockey update. Apparently, there are certainly people who believe that Shockey will be a Saint by the end of the Draft. I still don't think that it makes any sense, but if it happens, Jerry Reese better get at least a high 3rd round pick for him. If not, I'm lighting things on fire.

Going Prime Time...
The NFL has announced that the World Champion New York Giants will host the Washington Redskins in the season opener on September 4th.
Since my birthday is just five days later, I will be asking for 13 sacks of Jason Campbell.
