NCAA Football '08 Review

I buy NCAA Football every year. I do it for several reasons. I do it because it allows me to have draft classes for my Franchise in Madden. I do it because it gives me something to play in Mid-August. More recently, I do it because it's been a better game then Madden year in and year out.

Why? I don't know, it just seems like the NCAA team is more willing to change their game than the Madden guys are. Every year it seems like the game improves in evry aspect and always seems to try new things and more often then not they really work.

This year is no different. The game has been updated for '08 with several new features and most of them work. However, how much they really improve the game as a whole is another question.

First off, the gameplay is solid as always. I easily jumped into the game and was able to dominate the CPU on the default level based upon nothing but my knowledge of '07. The animations are smooth, but this still being the PS2 version, it isn't as pretty as it could be. However, I noticed some interesting things that seem to be tweaked.

Something that you will notice right away is that the number of interceptions is WAY up. Balls are routinely tipped up into the air and brought down by safeties and linebackers. The Defensive AI seems better then it has ever been but it almost seems to create a imbalance. The offense is almost left without a tool to equal things out of this. To make it worse, it seems that receivers drop balls at a more alarming rate than ever before. Now, I know that this could a be a statistical thing, but it seems to be widespread. I'm playing my Dynasty as UNLV and Ryan Wolfe is rated an 88. That's pretty good. Yet he still drops passes a lot.

Second is the new Lead by Example system. The basis of the system is the old "Impact Player" system where your team has three players who are capable of "getting hot" and making gamebreaking plays. Well, I always thought to myself: Why can't my Frosh 3rd receiver get hot after making a couple of nice catches? Well, now he can. You still have you impact players, and they receive larger stat bonus when "In the Zone," but now anybody can attain those bonuses on a smaller scale. I was worried about it being too arcady,(Think NBA Jam) but it works out well. One thing that I really Like is the system is dynamic on what it takes to be "In the Zone." For example, It might take a couple of tackles in the backfield for a Defensive linemen to get there, but a Strip Sack will make it happen real quick.

I've always thought that the Campus Legend mode is worthless, and that continues. I never touch it, and it appears to not have changed at all.

What I love is the aforementioned Dynasty Mode. It's still awesome and has some changes. Now, Redshirts, Scheduling and Recruting are all moved to a pre-season session rather than week one. Also included is a Summer Drills session, which is basically a re-hash of Madden's Training Camp mode. The drills are a little different but the idea is the same: To improve a few players on your team through playing some mini-games. Well, It's fun but there is one problem. There are too many drills. It's too easy to improve your team ALOT during these drills. Give me three offensive, three defensive and three Special teams and we are good. There are like 15 drills. That's 15 of 70 players that you can improve. That's alot of players to improve over the summer.

The other cool addition to dynasty mode is some recruiting functions. When a recruit now comes to visit your school, you can give him activities that fall into five cateogories to improve his visit. Well, It works, but it's kind of just an extension of selling a "pitch," something that they added a couple of years ago. Not exactly earth shattering.

Something else that I wish they could have done was clean up the cosmetics of the Dynasty mode menu. They put it on this "Notebook" background which works, but the ESPN the magazine covers are still pretty bland.

One VERY cool thing that is new is the inclusion of the My Shrine, which replaces last years' "Trophy Case." The Shrine is a room where they placed all of your acheivements through gameplay. It includes the trophies, the pennant collection (think Madden Cards), Your ESPN greates games (The mechanic is broken, I've had three point games that don't get included,) and some other stuff. It's just cool to have a graphical representation for everything.

The last thing that I think matters is the "Points Pursuit" Mode. It's a regular game only instead of using a traditional scoring system, you get points for making plays as well as touchdowns and field goals. For example, during a game with a friend, the game turned when he he got nearly 400 points for a sack and strip because it was user-controlled. There are also "Moneyballs" which serve to double, triple or quadruple points received on a particular play. It's an interesting way to combine the simulation game and and an arcade scoring system. It works and it's fun to play with a friend. It also allows you to unlock some stuff by scoring points and your record is viewable in My Shrine.

Overall, The game doesn't break any new real ground, but it's solid. More than anything, I think that the nervewracking part is that the Next-Generation versions seem to have alot of the same issues that I mentioned here.

Get the game. Get it for the Madden Draft Classes. Get it to occupy you until August 14th. Get it because The Dynasty mode is still fun. But don't expect anything you haven't already seen.

Overall Grade: B+

I know I sound negative in the review, but the game is still good. It just isn't what I expected. I hope that next year, the next generation version improves upon the solid base of '08.

A Quick Link to Awesomeness...

So, I now posses NCAA Football '08 for PS2 as Jason's XBOX 360 is currently under repair. I'll come back with a full review of it in a couple days, but I want to let everyone know about something that makes the NCAA experience worthwhile.

An online community has sprung up around the concept of filling in the rosters in NCAA so that they have the names and info of the real players instead of just the numbers.

For Example, Instead of my new favorite player being WR #89 on Rice, He would have all of his information and be named Jarrett Dillard. It's especially cool if you then load the draft classes into Madden.

How to you get these rosters? Well, It's a little complicated, but worth it.

Go to either PSXsports.com, or Operationsports.com and create an account and look for help topics around the message boards. PSX has one right on the homepage that is very helpful and easy to follow.

I promise this will increase your enjoyment of NCAA Football tenfold.

Video Game Notes: How to be a dork during the summer....

NCAA Football '08: I Love it when people listen to me. Look at the new recruiting features in NCAA this year.

And for the Dynasty Mode...

The Bigs:

Since Jason's XBOX 360 sucks, I can't get my hands on a copy of this to review it yet. I really want to though, and plan to once we figure out how the devil managed to possess Jason's XBOX.

In the meantime, This is Cool.

Madden '08

Not much news yet on Madden. Which is interesting because their is only one month left until it comes out. The Countdown on the side says so.

A Quick Video...

Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80's:

You saw the full tracklist. Now, Here's a video of some gameplay of a song dedicated to Loyal Reader Glenn Bedell. Looks eerily familiar. Who cares? GH has always been about the songs and now we have 30+ more to play.

Guitar Hero 3:

Now this looks a little different. The Tracklist is also a lot more varied. Here's a Video of one the better songs from my teenage years.

Jason and I are going to take the 4th off. Enjoy yours. It is America's birthday. You do love America right?

Wait, Don't eat them! I got tickets to Cirque Du Soleil....

Great Quote from a fantastic Movie.

Anyway, IGN.com just posted a big update about NCAA Football. Sad to say, there isn't all that much that sounds all that new. They reworked the Composure system so that instead of everyone having their own composure rating, they follow the lead of your big stars.

Does that sound like lateral movement to anyone else?

However, as I say siad previously, I wanted updates to the Dynasty Mode. Well, we seem to have a few.

"Adjustments have also been made to the Dynasty mode to make it a deeper experience for players. The pre-season has been redone with some new adjustments: players can now immediately redshirt players to extend their development underneath your team's system. This isn't simply for academic reasons either; players can also classify someone as a medical redshirt if they wind up getting injured early to preserve their eligibility. Players can customize their season schedule, making it tougher or easier for their team to be successful during the year. Pre-season recruiting has also been re-done, with a new focus on targeting the best prospects that will fill your teams needs as best as possible. Coaches will be able to now assign specific activities for these prospective students to check out when they make official visits to campuses, such as checking out the surrounding area or going over playbooks with a player. Incoming players will also make specific demands, such as wanting a certain number or amount of playtime for the next season. If a coach promises these items to a player, he'd better be prepared to fulfill these promises or he'll see that athlete transfer out of his program and the school's integrity rating take a hit."

Here we go again with the lateral movement. All this stuff sounds great, but we have seen it all before! The promises sound an awful lot like NCAA MVP Baseball. Medical Redshirts have been missing for years. It's nice to finally get that. However, I am beginning to wonder what is going to differenitiate this mode from the last couple of years. I'm beginning to think that it's nothing at all.

I'm Worried.

What The Hell?

This is a Travesty:

Ok, EA Sports, What the Hell?

Jared Zabransky. Are we serious here? Look at all of the Fantastic Players we had in this years draft. Brady Quinn, Calvin Johnson, and a certain future #31 on the New York Giants. But No, You instead chose Jared Zabransky.

This isn't the first time you've annoyed me either, EA Sports. Not at all. Recently, You seem intent upon turning out crappy rehashes of Madden each year rather than produce a quality update. Fine, I stopped playing games and started doing Franchises. Speaking of which, When is the last time you added anything new the Franchise mode in Madden? Yea, That would be like 2004. But, At least you've always been good with NCAA Football.

Until Last Year.

Now, You have me worried. Did Anyone notice that NCAA Football 07 played mysteriously similar to '06? Did anyone notice that nothing new was added to the Dynasty mode? Did anyone notice that the only new feature was that stupid "Campus Legend" mode? Isn't this kinda similar to the Ill-fated, nobody plays it, please stop for the love of god, Superstar Mode in Madden?

You have me very worried, EA Sports. And Now, you chose Jared Zabransky?

I understand that he led one of the greatest comebacks in College Football History. I get it. However, think back to that game. Remember when he threw a pass HORIZONTALLY across the field and it was returned for a pick-six? Remember him almost losing that game for them? Hell, Why not put Coach Chris Peterson on the cover? He is the one who had the balls to call the hook & ladder?

Instead, We get a guy who wasn't even drafted. A guy who was signed as a Free Agent by the Texans. Wow.

Way to regain my confidence, EA sports. The Game better be good.
