I haven't wrote about football in a very long time. The reason is two fold; one, after the draft nothing really happens until training camp and secondly I have been consumed by this baseball season.
However, there are a few important Niner developments that are noteworthy.
I questioned the Niners draft this year because, at the time, a lot of the selections looked like they were for depth and the Niners did not take any "skill position" players early on (for a team that has been rebuilding for four years it's a tough pill to swallow.)
However, since they draft a lot has changed. Chilo Richal, a guard at USC (2nd round), has kicked out to Right Tackle. This gives Richal the fast track to a starting job, the starting right tackle is currently Jonas Jennings. Jennings is injury prone, has a huge contract and has been away from the team for most of the off-season. I don't think it's a stretch to say the he might not make the opening day roster.
On defense big ticket free agent defensive end Justin Smith has been working at Right Outside Linebacker. Now in a 3-4 the majority of your pass rush comes from this position, previously the Niners had free agent bust Tully-Banta Catin penciled in as a starter. It's impossible to say how Smith, who isn't regarded as an elite athlete, will adjust to the new position. The move does explain the decision to draft DE/DT Ketwan Balmer in the first round. Smith playing with his hand up more allows Balmer to take his spot on the defensive line.
I like these defensive adjustments. If nothing else it finally gives the Niners the personnel to run the hybrid 3-4 defense that Nolan ran in Baltimore.
In a 3-4 alignment the Niners defense will look like this:
Balmer/Franklin/Sopoaga
Smith/Willis/Ulbrich/Lawson
Clements/Roman/Lewis/Harris
In a 4-3 alignment:
Smith/Balmer/Franklin/Sopoaga
Ulbrich/Willis/Lawson
Clements/Roman/Lewis/Harris
If you notice all Smith has to do is switch from standing to a three point stance to change the front. The Niners should be able to throw a lot of different looks at offenses just from their base defense. Smith in therory would be like Adalius Thomas or Terelle Suggs.
And last but not least DeShuan Goldson. Last year Goldson was impressive before getting injured. Goldson, a converted cornerback, is a ball hawk. A "center fielder" type Free Safety. Rumor has it that he has in the inside track to the job over Mark Roman.
Goldson would complement Lewis, a more physical saftey, perfectly.
All in all I have high hopes for this Niners team.

NFL Draft Grades - NFC West - San Francisco 49ers
1.(29) Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina - Balmer will lineup as a 3-4 end most likely and attempt to fill the very large shoes created by the retirement of Bryant Young, who deserves more rounds of applause then anyone could imagine. It's not a sexy pick, and it's hardly revolutionary. However, it's a solid one. Look for Balmer to start soon.
Pick Grade: B+
2.(39) Chilo Rachal, G, USC - I wasn't crazy about this pick. However, it seems that everyone raved about how NFL-Ready Rachal seems to be than his counterparts. He played in a very pro style offense under Pete Carroll, so I don't doubt it. If he comes as advertised, he could solidify what should already be a good offensive line.
Pick Grade: B
3. (75) Reggie Smith, CB, Oklahoma - Oh, How I love this pick. It was great value for a guy who looked to be a first round talent, and he fills a need because he can either play cornerback or safety. Doesn't have tremendous speed, but good knowledge of the game and a nose for the ball more than makes up for it.
Pick Grade: A-
4. (107) Cody Wallace, C, Texas A&M - While I liked Steve Justice, who was still on the board, much better, you can't underestimate just what having a back-up swing player on the offensive line does. It allows the 49ers to backup both guards and center with a solid, smart, tough player. Solid Pick.
Pick Grade: B-
6.(174) Josh Morgan, WR, Virginia Tech - Well, this is interesting. VT hardly ever throws the ball, and when they did, it was typical to Eddie Royal. Therefore, Morgan is a bit of a tough player to evaluate. However, He also could be a diamond in the rough. The Niners must have liked something they saw.
Pick Grade: ? (Hey, We'll call it a C.)
7. (214) Larry Grant, OLB, Ohio State - Relatively productive player for Jim Tressel. Wonder about his ability to ever play anything more than special teams.
Pick Grade: D
Overall Grade: B
Not a whole lot of flash for Jason's team, but filled some holes nicely. Outside of Morgan, who is a TOTAL wild card, they will get the production they expect from most of these guys, but won't find themselves hitting any real home runs.

Blazer?
Well, as it turns out Louis Holmes is a former Arizona Wildcat, and seeing as I spent part of my college days there, I watched quite a bit of him.
With him, the hype never happened on the field.
He was the number one junior college player in America when Mike Stoops signed him. He proceeded to start for most of the next two seasons, but struggled to amass any real prodcution. That being said, he was playing on a defense that contained five men now on NFL rosters (Holmes, Spencer Larsen, Lionel Dotson, Wilrey Fontenot and Antoine Cason) not to mention Giants safety Mike Johnson the year before that. How do you not produce with talent like that around you?
My point is, that while he's a physical specimen, don't be fooled in to thinking that he's a great player. He's nothing more than a long-term project, a role in which he's failed before.

Missed One
I missed the Bucs taking Dre Moore who is surprisingly athletic for his size. More proof of the trade down mantra I sport.
Speaking of trading down. Quick Niner Analysis. Cody Wallace seems like a safe pick. He's a solid guy with a ton of starting experience at a big program. He was Coached by Noaln during the Senior Bowl. A little surprised taking him over Collins. I like what Wallace offers and he certainly meets a need but this pick was more of a reach than people think. There were a lot of talented players on the board and I think you can get a guy like Wallace in the 6/7th round. Speaking of trading down since the NFL robbed us of our 5th round pick and we don't have any compensatory picks this pick should have been moved by SF.

49ers Players To Watch Day 2
49ers had a line drive draft. Solid picks that fit both value and need. It builds depth for the team and gives them two potential starters. The only qualm you cold have with their first round is that they didn't add a play making WR that they desperately need. However as we surprisingly learned today, this was not a WR class that was thought of highly at all.
Look for these players to be considered by the 49ers on day two:
QB - Colt Brennan: Maybe a 6-7th round flier. Wouldn't expect them to draft anyone else.
RB - Would not expect a RB to be drafted.
FB - Peyton Hills, Owen Schimdt, Jacob Hester. Keep an eye on Hester in the 4th round. Nolan has expressed a desire for a goal line back.
WR - Andre Caldwell, Early Doucet, Lavelle Hawkins. I expect that the 49ers will use their 3rd round pick on a WR. Caldwell is a great fit in Martz's offense.
TE - In a word, No.
OG,C,OT - We could use a 5th or 6th rounder for another swing tackle type. I don't expect another offensive lineman to be drafted so soon though. Keep an eye on Carl Nicks, an extremely troubled yet talented football player.
DE - Balmer fills a need as a base 3-4 end who can play Nose Tackle in a pinch. In a 4-3 defense he slides inside to DT. I love Balmer and can only hope he isn't a one year wonder. With Balmer, Smith and the resigned Sopogoa I expect that the Niners defense line rotation is set.
OLB - If I were to guess depending on who is available one of our early day two picks will be used an a pass rushing DE/LB tweener. Watch out for Cliff Avril, Jeremy Thompson, Darell Robertson, Philip Wheeler, Erin Henderson, Shawn Crable. I don't see the Niners drafting a compliment to Willis but if they do look for a thumper remember the name Beau Bell.
CB - Donald Strickland's brush with the law makes it likely that depth will be added. In the 4th-5th round range. I really like Reggie Smith who can also play FS.

Honestly I was nervous about this pick. I like the outcome. You build in the trenches and Balmer will be an excellent fit alongside Justin Smith.

This move paves the way for the Niners to make a run at Lance Briggs or Justin Smith.
-Bears cut Mushin Muhammad
The Bears have a lot of depth at WR but very few proven commodities. Considering their stellar WR Berrian is a free agent this move makes you scratch your head. You'd assume that the bears have some kind of plan. This move makes them more likely to resign Berrian or make a run at someone like Donte Stallworth.
-Pat's pass on Stallworth's option
Expected. The Pat's have a lot of money tied up in WR's (assuming they resign Moss/Gaffney) and Stallworth was passed on the depth chart by Jabar Gaffney.
-The Falcons purge
Crumpler, Coleman were among the big cuts from the Falcons roster purge. Both still have value particularly Crumpler. He'll catch on with another team for sure and still could still be an elite level tight end. The Bucs and Panthers are some logical fits.
Coleman might not be an every down player anymore but he can still be a one gap rusher from the DT position. Bucs, Giants, Redskins are solid fits for him.

DeAngelo Hall and Lito Sheppard can apparently be had (though their availability has been disputed.)
Sheppard is young, locked up cheaply but is injury prone. Hall has character issues and was a malcontent under the Petrino regime. I don't think Sheppard gets moved but for a late first rounder Hall is a solid value.

The surprising names are Andrews and Williams. Andrews wasn't a starter and was last year still considered a big time prospect. You would imagine that he'll be starting next year for the Bungles. Andrews tag also means Justin Smith is hitting the open market. Willams was the default best DT on the market and now Isaac Sapoga (49ers) suddenly finds himself the default best DT on the market (you wonder if the Niners might follow suit and tag Isaac.) The Pack have managed their cap wonderfully and can fully afford to take the cap hit but you've got wonder how much in any confidence they have in former first rounder Justin Harell.
With all the corners off the market you know Asante Samuel is going to cash in big time.
-Around the NFL
Zach Thomas is going to have his choice of jobs, I question how much he has left in the tank. Betrand Berry is coming back to Arizona and might land himself a starting job if Calvin Pace departs. TE Bubba Franks is looking for a new job, he has value as a role player, same with S Dwight Smith. With Trufant getting tagged D.J Hackett is going to hit the open market. Hackett is injury prone but he's had flashes of brilliance. I think Buffalo is a good fit for him.
Derek Anderson seems to be on a verge of a new contract. I still think they should have struck while the iron was hot and dealt him but if it's only a three year deal it might be a more tolerable decision in my eyes.
-G-Men update
So Osi hasn't demanded a new contract which is nice. We know that Diehl and Snee want new contracts but they don't seem to be holdout risks and we know Eli is going to come knocking at some point.
The good news is the coaching staff/front office is remaining intact, which is important continuity is always a good thing.
In terms of free agents I find the Gibril Wilson situation fascinating.
He's a young saftey who's play has only gotten better. He would seem to be a key cog in the Giants young defensive machine.
But it almost seems like the Giants don't want him back. He wants Ed Reed money and while he might not deserve to be paid among the top players in the game...he will be. With the cap rising team's have money to burn.
It would seem there would be a simple solution where Wilson gets paid and the G-Men don't have to commit long term to him. It's called the franchise tag.
According to the Boston Globe the price for franchising a saftey is a paltry $4.39 million.
Which is what brings me to the fact that Giants might not have an interest in keeping him.
I remember last year when he was a restricted free agent the Giants didn't tender him at the highest level (1rst and 3rd rounder) they tendered him at the mid level (2nd rounder) and now here we are again and it seems to the Giants are poised to let Wilson go.
I'm confused, but Reese has been so money so far that I don't feel like eating any more crow...at least not just yet.
Free Agents Watch
In house: Wilson and Mithcell. It's looking like Wilson goes and Mitchells stays.
On the Market: I wouldn't expect any big signings. Someone like Coleman or Dwight Smith are nice veteran fits.
Draft: I think a CB/S Tweener type is the best fit for the G - Men right now. Someone like Reggie Smith.
-J-e-t-s JETS JETS JETS
The Jets definitely need pieces on both offense and defense. Mangini has a nice core of youngsters (Cotchery, D-Brick, Mangold, Revis, Harris, Rhodes.) now he needs to add some veterans that actually fit his scheme.
Free Agents:
D-Line: Tommy Kelly, big end from Oakland. Still young but coming of an ACL injury.
Isaac Sopoaga, big NT from San Fran. Strong guy with a NT body. Last year was his first year of true production.
LB:
OLB: Calvin Pace, think Bryan Thomas. Former DE bust who revived himself as an OLB in a 3-4 while in a contract year.
Clark Haggans, a OLB from the Steelers. Not a great athlete but gets the job done, though he might be on the downside of his career.
ILB: Zach Thomas, a familiar face for Jets fans.
Kendrell Bell, former ROTY with the Steelers. His value is at an all time low right now as he was a horrendous fit in the 4-3 with K.C. I think he can still be a great 2-Down Run Stuffing TED ILB in a 3-4. He's a perfect fit alongside David Harris.
CB: Shallow, unless the Jets want to break the bank for Asante.
On offesne the big ticket would be Steelers LG Alan Faneca. Fanaeca a Pro-Bowler might be on the downside of his career but he's still a force. However if the Jets wouldn't break the bank for Kendall why would they for Fanaeca.
Prospect Of the Week!
Lets switch it up a little bit. Instead of giving you a guy I really like I'm going to give you a guy I really don't.
Bust Watch:
Jake Long.
He's not a LT. Some team, like K.C. is going to draft him, expect him to stabilize their line (ala Joe Thomas) and be disappointed. At best he becomes Jordan Gross, a franchise RT.

But it almost seems like the Giants don't want him back. He wants Ed Reed money and while he might not deserve to be paid among the top players in the game...he will be. With the cap rising team's have money to burn.
It would seem there would be a simple solution where Wilson gets paid and the G-Men don't have to commit long term to him. It's called the franchise tag.
According to the Boston Globe the price for franchising a saftey is a paltry $4.39 million.
Which is what brings me to the fact that Giants might not have an interest in keeping him.
I remember last year when he was a restricted free agent the Giants didn't tender him at the highest level (1rst and 3rd rounder) they tendered him at the mid level (2nd rounder) and now here we are again and it seems to the Giants are poised to let Wilson go.
I'm confused, but Reese has been so money so far that I don't feel like eating any more crow...at least not just yet.
Free Agents Watch
In house: Wilson and Mithcell. It's looking like Wilson goes and Mitchells stays.
On the Market: I wouldn't expect any big signings. Someone like Coleman or Dwight Smith are nice veteran fits.
Draft: I think a CB/S Tweener type is the best fit for the G - Men right now. Someone like Reggie Smith.

The Jets definitely need pieces on both offense and defense. Mangini has a nice core of youngsters (Cotchery, D-Brick, Mangold, Revis, Harris, Rhodes.) now he needs to add some veterans that actually fit his scheme.
Free Agents:
D-Line: Tommy Kelly, big end from Oakland. Still young but coming of an ACL injury.
Isaac Sopoaga, big NT from San Fran. Strong guy with a NT body. Last year was his first year of true production.
LB:
OLB: Calvin Pace, think Bryan Thomas. Former DE bust who revived himself as an OLB in a 3-4 while in a contract year.
Clark Haggans, a OLB from the Steelers. Not a great athlete but gets the job done, though he might be on the downside of his career.
ILB: Zach Thomas, a familiar face for Jets fans.
Kendrell Bell, former ROTY with the Steelers. His value is at an all time low right now as he was a horrendous fit in the 4-3 with K.C. I think he can still be a great 2-Down Run Stuffing TED ILB in a 3-4. He's a perfect fit alongside David Harris.
CB: Shallow, unless the Jets want to break the bank for Asante.
On offesne the big ticket would be Steelers LG Alan Faneca. Fanaeca a Pro-Bowler might be on the downside of his career but he's still a force. However if the Jets wouldn't break the bank for Kendall why would they for Fanaeca.
Prospect Of the Week!
Lets switch it up a little bit. Instead of giving you a guy I really like I'm going to give you a guy I really don't.
Bust Watch:
Jake Long.
He's not a LT. Some team, like K.C. is going to draft him, expect him to stabilize their line (ala Joe Thomas) and be disappointed. At best he becomes Jordan Gross, a franchise RT.

The Briggs Man Cometh
Write it down, the 49ers will sign free agent linebacker Lance Briggs.
Today the 49ers waived Derek M. Smith. Smith frees up 3.24 million in cap room, giving the Niners even more financial flexibility.
Like I wrote earlier I have mixed feelings with a Briggs signing. Clearly he is a huge upgrade over Derek Smith, however the 49ers still have Brandon Moore on their roster. Moore played extremely well in 2006 before somehow finding himself in Nolans doghouse.
In the 3-4 the OLB is more important than the ILB position. The 49ers already have a play making ILB (Mike) in the 3-4 in rising star Patrick Willis. The other position (TED) which Briggs would be playing is not suppose to be a glamorous position, a play maker of Briggs caliber would almost be wasted.
However it's hard not to get excited about the potential of the Niners defense in 2008.

Ok...I'm Getting Excited
I don't know what to expect from the 49ers this year. I can tell you one thing for sure....they'll be a hell of a lot better than they were last year.
I have been incredibly critical of Nolan's regime so far. So many of his moves on and off the field have been inexplicable. He's been loyal to players who have clearly fallen off (Dilfer and Derek Smith come to mind) and it's been directly correlated to the Win - Loss column. His 4th down decisions have been tremendously awful and so have his choices of coordinators (See Davis, Billy and Hostler, Jim.) His relationships with players have come into question, especially the Alex Smith debacle. He openly questions players toughness, like Smith, and even dramatically crawled on the locker room floor like a "man in the desert dying of dehydration" to mock Jonas Jennings.
However to be fair he has been backed up into some impossible situations. He took over a team with no talent and while it hasn't been reflected statistically he certainly has the roster headed in the right direction. He has hired brilliant offensive minds as coordinators. There just so brillant that they get head coaching jobs. McCarthy left for Green Bay and was replaced by Turner, who did an outstanding job. Turner left for San Diego and left so late in the process that Nolan couldn't even make overtures to other potential candidates such as Ken Zampese. He was stuck with hiring in house.
Now Nolan has brought in another brilliant offensive mind, albeit a controversial one. Mike Martz is either going to make or break Coach Nolan.
The defense of this team should emerge to be a great strength. As I alluded to if Nolan's done one thing well it's been in player evaluation. He has drafted well and has also wisely used free agency to acquire star players (like Clements and Lewis) while avoiding the pitfalls of a team like the Washington Redskins.
So as the draft and free agency near I find myself getting excited. In a weak NFC west there is no reason the Niners shouldn't be competitive. The Defense has young core with Willis, Lawson, Clements and Lewis. There have been a lot of rumors swirling around, for over a year now, about the Niners adding Lance Briggs. While I question the fit and question if that money could be better off spent elsewhere it's hard to argue with the talent Briggs would bring with him. And if the thought of a line backing core of Briggs, Lawson, Willis and whoever else is certainly something to salivate over.
So while I spent the 07 season moping it's time for some positive thinking.
Hell if Eli Manning can turn it around overnight than anything can happen. The economy can boom, we can get out of the War in Iraq and Alex Smith can be the next big thing.

Jason is a Funny Guy...
Isn't it hysterical that Jason has the ability to talk himself into things? He's managed to convince himself of a lot of things in the past, but this one might actually make his head explode.
How bad is it?
Well, earlier today I was taking a nap on Jason's couch. I innocently fell asleep and then I heard screaming. I was in that "I can hear it, but I don't think that I could do anything about it if someone was going to stab me because I'm really kinda still asleep" mode. Let's start with the bad, because theres a whole lot of it.
My initial reaction was horror. I hate Mike Martz. I hate his personality and more importantly I despise his offesne. I like a little more excitement in my offense than just "three yards and a cloud of dust" but I'm anti spread offense. And that's exactly what Martz is bringing to the table. Your not getting him to change, he's not all of a sudden going to run 25+ times a game. With Martz, much like Nolan it's his way or the hard way (more on that in a second.)
Simply put this doomed any chance of winning in '08 the Niners did have. Martz does not have the players needed to run his gimmicky offense. In fact his best weapons Davis and especially Gore are underutilized in Martz's offense. I just don't get the fit.
Going back to Martz's personality I also don't see how it fits in with Nolan. Unless somehow the Niners decided "hey, how many giant ego's can we fit in one room?"
Nolan has been critically conservative during his tenure. How's he going to feel when Martz is throwing hail mary's 99 times a game?
I just don't think it works. Frankly I am shocked (and appalled) that Cam Cameron didn't get an interview.
Here's a math problem:
Philip Rivers + Antonio Gates + LDT + Cam Cameron = 14-2
Alex Smith (or Shaun Hill) + Vernon Davis + Frank Gore + Cam Cameron = ?
I'm not saying they would be as good as the Chargers but, the players are eerily similar.
Now the good...
(I may or may not actually believe the following but by the time the season starts I will have successful talked myself into it)
1) MOST IMPORTANT: It can't be any worse!
When you have the 32nd ranked offense statistically...you have the worst offense in the NFL (and this year possible the history of the world)

3) Martz is good with QB's. Warner, Bulger, Green, Kitna....he does have a touch for turning poop into....chocolate flavored poop.
4) See 1 or 2
5) Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey: They aren't that great and had respectable seasons in Martz scheme. Battle is a shifty, quick sure handed receiver and should do very well in Martz's offense. Jason Hill and Ashley Lelie are vertical guys who are in the Az-Hakim mold. (Hey! What's Az doing these days?)
5) Hold on...I'm reading number 1 again
6) Alex Smith played in an open offense in college. Yes, Smith regressed before he got hurt this season. But, two years ago he took tremendous steps to become a NFL caliber starting QB. He might never be a "franchise" guy but Mike Martz might be able to resurrect some of the magic Smith had in college.
7) Veron Davis. Martz has never had a weapon like VD. Davis is as big as some linebackers and as quick as the WR Martz's vertical spread offense requires. Martz might be dumb but trust me he will get the ball into VD's hands a lot.
8) Gore. So, he might only run the ball 9 times a game...but it doesn't mean he'll be sitting on the sidelines. Remember Kevin Jones (who's injury prone and not as good as Gore) was active this year. Gore also has great hands, in fact every week I screamed at my T.V. for Jim Hostler to throw more screen passes.
9) The Shaun Hill X Factor. Bill Simmons had a great point on his podcast. Every now and then one of these backup QB's emerges, seemingly out of nowhere to become a star. Delhome, Hasslebeck, Garrad, Romo ect. So is it fluke? His point was that in order to be a backup QB at the NFL level for a prolonged period of time you have to have some ability. You have to constantly prefrom at a high enough level to stay a backup. Think about how many guys wash out and you never hear from them again. I'm not saying it's a lock for Hill to be the next Romo....but it's possible.
10) Ya...and it's also possible monkeys could fly outta my but.

One Of The All-Time Greats Calls It Quits
Sometimes news coverage really bothers me. Do we really need hours of T.O V Jessica Simpson coverage? Do we really need to hear Skip Bayless talk about how this is going to effect the season? (God I hate Skip)
I understand the appeal of such a story line, I am as big of a pop-culture whore as you'll likely find. However as this NFL season winds down I can think of many many more storylines that deserve attention.
Did you know Bryant Young is retiring? Probably not, because he's not dating a hot blonde but, he is and it's an end of a sure fire hall of fame career.
A rare feat these days Young played his entire 14 year career with the 49ers. Over that span of time he amassed 90 sacks. Even today he still plays at a high level having 6.5 sacks going into week 14. His value comes on the field as much as it does off. The man has served as the captain and leader of this team for almost the better part of two decades. For a franchise that has been so unstable for the past 5or so years he has been the one constant.
It's amazing to me that a player still playing at such a high level would want to call it quits. But, unlike many other aging athletes who didn't know when to call it quits (Cough Roger Clemens Cough) Young knows when his time is up.
"The question is, when do you leave the game?" Young said. "Do you leave the game when they push you out or when you're barely walking? When's the right time? That's up to the individual. You have to listen to what your body and what your spirit is telling you."
So 49ers faithful go out to the game this Sunday and wear your red and gold 97 jerseys. We might not have much to cheer for but we can at least show our appreciation for a man who gave us all so much joy these past 14 years.
And to the national media and NFL fans all over, if you love and appreciate the game you should do the same.
He's going out in the classiest way possible.

The Big-Ass Draft Update!
Real Quick, If the NFL draft happened today, where would Louisville Quarterback Brian Brohm be taken?

The answer is the second round.
That's right, everyone's preseason golden boy has actually fallen out of the first round according to this week's Drafttek mock.
At first I was sure that this couldn't be, but upon some ivnestigation, I realized that it's possible. He no longer has Bobby Petrino in Atlanta to fall back on. There are two quarterbacks that are better than him in this class, Andre Woodson and Matt Ryan.
Ryan goes at 11 to Carolina, and Woodson goes to Chi-town at 12.
Of course this is assuming that these teams don't pick up free agents, but it's still fun in terms of debate.

 If Darren McFadden is still available this could wind up being the ultimate battle of Talent vs. Need. Chris Long certainly wouldn't be a sexy pick, especially compared to McFadden, but he is a perfect fit for Eric Mangini's 3-4 scheme and would finally give them that impact defensive lineman they have been searching for. Jake Long would also be safe pick who'd help solidify their offensive line while Vernon Gholston might be the type of impact pass rusher they need at outside linebacker but ultimately this picks comes down to Chris Long or McFadden and Mangini's defensive roots win out. | |

 For the second consecutive year it looks like wide receiver will be the Niners most glaring need. Credit the team with attempting to address the situation last offseason but Darrell Jackson hasn't lived up to expectations, Ashley Lelie was a complete bust and 3rd round pick Jason Hill has essentially been a non-factor. After biding his time behind two future #1 picks in Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis early in his career Early Doucet finally got his chance to shine as a senior and even though he's been limited by nagging injuries he has shown just enough to remain on that first round bubble. | |

Yup, He's Right.
That's exactly how that conversation would go.
Listen, I understand the shock that Jason is in right now, we all go through it.Look at the Giants in 2003-04. It was miserable. A 4-12 season when everyone knew that the door was closing on that team. Kerry Collins, Keith Hamilton, Jesse Armstead, all of them were not getting any younger. The only hope the team had was Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey. Yet, I still listened to every game while I was in school in Arizona, and I still went to the Final game of the season, even if it was to watch Jesse Palmer play quarterback.
However, This is something Jason does a lot in life. Here's a perfect example:
We'll be playing Madden, and as the third quarter starts, Jason will be down 14. Normally, I've completled confused him with my defensive scheme and he's disheartened. He'll throw one mroe interception and in frustration, He'll quit the game. No chance for a comeback, he'd rather just submit and admit that he sucks.
This is the real life equivalent. He would rather just divorce himself from his team then suffer through the darkness before the light. It's tough, I know. Personally, I know that I die with my team. It's befuddling to think that anyone could just flip a switch and no longer care.
Why does he do it? I don't know, maybe his mom never hugged him as a child.
Then again, He also says things like this little beauty of a conversation yesterday during the Jet Game.
Me: "Look, I have a Christmas Tree on my laptop. It's awesome."
Jason: "Not for nothing, Christmas...kinda Overrated."
Yup, This is my best friend.

Here's a Thought...
With all this talk about Eli, Here's a fun piece of news from Rotoworld.com:
49ers coach Mike Nolan was asked Wednesday whether the team could consider dumping Alex Smith and his $49.5 million contract in the off season.
Now, This brings up an interesting thought: Is Smith a bust, or hs he been sabotaged by the constant change in San Francisco?
Think about this. He has had three different offensive coordinators since being drafted first overall in 2003. He has never had any kind of consistency in the people around him, and certainly has never had a number one receiver.
I don't think that it would be wise to give up on Smith so early. He has talent, otherwise he never would have been taken first overall. He is perfectly capable of being a B-level quarterback, but he needs to start having consistency. With a good running back and a solid tight end, and an offensive coordinator who knows what he's doing, the team can win with him at QB.

RIP Dick Nolan
First Bill Walsh now this. It's truly a tough year in the Bay Area.
Besides being current head coach Mike Nolans father the elder Nolan was a player and a head coach. Dick Nolan was the first coach to lead the 49ers to a division title.
Nolan had missed practice both Friday and Saturday to be with his ailing father.
Nolan plans on coaching on Monday Night against the Seahawks in a game that will certainly take on new meaning.
Hopefully the 49ers can put on a magical performance akin to that of Brett Farve a couple of years ago.

Smith!! Engram!!! It's MNF On ESPN!!!!
You know, beat writer, Matt Maiocco writes often about how he isn't a 49ers fan. How it would be impossible for him to be a fan and a beat writer at the same time. Now I can see his dilemma. I literally have had no urge to write about this team for almost two weeks now. What's left to say. Our talent on the filed is minimal, our coaching staff doesn't seem to have a clue and you can't even look froward to having a top five draft pick next year.
As a fan it sucks.
The amazing thing about this team, now 2-6, is how easily they could have been 4-4. The Falcons game was given away, and the Niners were a missed field goal from walking out with a win against Baltimore. And guess what, 4-4, would mean a first place tie with the equally awful Seahwaks in the NFC Worst.
Instead, you have a 2-6 team, with no direction and a seemingly cloudy future. Alex Smith has regressed, and if a new coaching staff comes in (with not attachment to him) he might get him the ax. Gore, we all know is injury prone, but you can blame his sub par performance this year on the offensive line.
The offensive line this was suppose to be an area of strength for the Niners, instead it's been their Achilles heal. Wholesale changes are in line for next year and they have already begun. Jennings, who just went on the I.R., days as a Niner are numbered. He's been a disappointment. He has dominated at times but could never ever stay on the field. Ronnie Lott called out his toughness and when Ronnie speaks you listen. Smiley, joins Jennings on the I.R. and out of red and gold. Smiley played reasonably well but didn't seem to be a good fit in Nola...er Turners power running game. Smiley, an impending free agent is bound to be an all-pro somewhere else. Teams such as Denver or Huston, zone blocking teams, should set out to acquire the undersized guard. Following the aforementioned players out of town will be Kwame Harris, a huge disappointment and Larry Allen. Allen, a legend, is done. It's been a hell of a career but it's time to hang it up.
I'd like to find bright spots on this team. But they are few and far between. What fans are going to witness this Monday night is a superior team with a superior coaching staff destroying a team inferior in every aspect.
I can guarantee you one thing. It won't be pretty.

Quick! Someone Spike My Kool-Aide
Last week I wrote that the calls for Mike Nolan's head might begin to get louder if the team continued to struggle. Well, Nolan certainly did nothing to prevent himself from moving closer to the chopping block this week.
When looking at a struggling team you can blame almost anyone or anything. Injuries, play calling, scheme, talent and so on. But in the end, it all comes back to the head coach.
Nolan put this team on the field, he elected to use a 3-4 defense, he is involved in the font office. He shares the responsibility of "shopping for his own groceries."
You want to like Nolan, and I think alot people have allowed his obvious flaws to pass because of it. He's classy, well spoken and intelligent. He has all the qualities a head football coach should. However, when it comes down to it he's a terrible game day coach.
His decision making is often questionable, particularly being ultra conservative with fourth and short situations. Of course he elected to do a smart thing and delegate alot of his responsibilities to coordinators this year, however the men he surrounds himself with often seem incompetent. Last year Billy Davis ran the defense and was so atrocious he was ran out of town. This year Nolan handed the keys to the offense to Hostler, who will certainly be run out of town as well. Besides the offense and defense what intangibles does Nolan bring to the table? Do his players play hard for him? Look at this gem from Rotoworld.com

Nolan at least seemed to be very competent at assembling talent and finding steals in drafts. The last three drafts have been applauded by almost every major media outlet. In hindsight were they really that good? Alex Smith is looking like a tremendous bust. Sure he doesn't have them most talent in the world around him but he has regressed tremendously this year. Brandon Williams, a first day pick, was cut. Vernon Davis, while admittedly raw, hasn't lived up to the billing of a high first round pick. And so on.
Year after year teams emerge out of no where, the Saints and Jets last year are a perfect example. In a league so filled with parity it's hard to imagine that after three years the 49ers aren't able to field a team that is NFL caliber. Seriously, the 49ers have looked like a CFL team for the last couple of games. It's completely inexcusable
And it all comes back to Nolan.

Walt Harris was carted off the with an undisclosed injury on Sunday.
Harris was targeted early and often by Drew Brees and the Saints, almost always getting beat and often looking disinterested in the game.
